Robert uses a mixture of mechanisms for effect. A cable drive control box allows him to move forward by turning a handle and to steer by squeezing a trigger. It's not a particularly efficient method and the design had to be altered to improve its reliability.
A single battery fits underneath the head and provides power for a light in the head, visible through the eyes and the top spindle. Finally a crank on the back operates a crude but effective record complete with a cardboard diaphragm that lets him talk: "I'm Robert Robot Mechanical Man ....".
